How to budget for a pet

Initial expenses

First you will need to consider a few things before bringing your furry friend home. A lot of shelters offer different services to ensure the health and safety of your pet. These services include:

  • Micro-chipping
  • Spaying/neutering
  • Vaccinating
  • Insurance

In addition, MarketWatch has information on the top pet insurance companies, to help save money on unexpected health-related costs.

Pet adoption

Adopting a pet is also cheaper than buying a purebred. So, if you are looking to cut costs, and pedigree is not an important factor in your four-legged friend, then consider visiting an adoption centre. All animal shelters will require you to pass a background check and have a sponsor. Please consider that there is usually a small fee for adopting, even at shelters.

Recurring expenses

Once you’ve brought home your new family member and got settled, it will be time to consider some recurring expenses. These include:

  • Routine vet appointments
  • Preventative medications (such as flea, tick and heartworm medication)
  • Grooming services
  • Insurance fees
  • Pet food
  • Puppy pads/litter box litter

Routine vet appointments and preventative care are definitely the most important parts of a pet’s life. Being able to make sure that your pet is healthy and that their health is not headed in the wrong direction is crucial.

While grooming services may not be required for all dogs and cats, going to regular hair and/or nail trimmings can be truly beneficial for your pet. This is because some pets’ nails can become overgrown and cause pain and discomfort when walking. Similarly, a pet’s hair being too long in hot climates can be detrimental to their health. Overheating and even dehydration can occur.

Also, consider the expenses that come with keeping a dog entertained and happy. They will need to chew on safe toys and have ample play time. Toys can be found for cheap, and can even be home-made out of old clothes and towels.

Other expenses

In addition, remember that if you are renting property, or just enjoy holidaying often, other expenses may also be included. Most landlords will require you to pay an initial fee for owning a pet, as well as monthly costs. Airlines also require a similar fee for boarding your pet. Still, if you aren’t looking to take a furry friend up in
the air with you, taking your pet to a kennel or hiring a pet sitter will also cost you a few pounds.

Having a pet can be one of the most rewarding, comforting, and enjoyable experiences. It is imperative to prepare financially so that you can reap these rewards. Hopefully this post has given you some useful advice on how to budget for a pet.
