Since being on lockdown, I see so many people getting out religiously every day for a walk as their ‘daily exercise.’ But we haven’t been doing the same. We’ve been for a few walks here and there but by no means every day. Partly because I feel pretty anxious when we go out. The twiglets aren’t always the best listeners and I’m so nervous about them running off and getting too close to other people. Also, the weather has been lovely and we’re lucky to have a decent-sized garden, so we haven’t always felt the need to actually get out walking during lockdown. Plus we’ve had mixed success when we have been out. Sometimes the twigs are quite reluctant to walk as I think they’ve got so out of practice!
But the other day, we actually had a really really lovely walk. It didn’t seem stressful and was genuinely so enjoyable. We went to our local park, which is about a 10 minute walk away. When we’d been previously, it had felt uncomfortably busy and made me very nervous. So this time we ventured off the main path and ended up coming across such a lovely quiet area. It’s amazing finding beautiful places almost on your doorstep that you didn’t know were there!
I find setting the twiglets a little task to do really helps make walks more fun. There are loads of lovely ideas in this post by The Mum Diaries.
So I set the twiglets a task of collecting as many natural ‘treasures’ as they could find. They loved gathering up little bits and bobs in their bag. And we saw a butterfly up really close which they were very excited by!
When we got home we made some natural art with some of the things they’d collected. A fairly ordinary moment really but it was such lovely quality time together.
It definitely made me see why others are making sure they get out every day for a walk. Now that I know of some quieter areas to go, I will be making sure we get out for walks more regularly. Probably still not every day though 🙂
How about you? How often have you been going out walking during lockdown?
