We were kindly sent a copy of the fabulous new picture book – ‘Wild’ written by two lovely bloggers Annette (of 3 Little Buttons) and Dawn (from the former Rhyming With Rhyme blog). Here is what we thought!

Wild picture book review

What is the picture book ‘Wild’ about?

Annette says:

Wild is about two lovely little wolves, Wolfie and Wilfie, who are teased by a wickedly wild, growly and scowly wolf pack, simply because they don’t fit in. But, as the naughty wolf pack is about to pounce on Granny’s basket of pies, they bravely find the courage and kindness to come to her rescue.

In the story, the wolves are a clever metaphor for peer pressure, toxic masculinity and gang mentality. It aims to teach children that they don’t need to follow the pack and they should follow their hearts and choose kindness instead.

What did the twiglets think of ‘Wild’?

The twiglets have loved reading Wild. They are pretty wild themselves so it definitely appealed to them! 😉 They totally grasped the message of the story and recognised that the wolves who were kind ultimately got the reward.

The twigs also loved the pictures in the book. The illustrations by Ryan Sonderegger are beautiful and so appealing to children. Also, the layout and design of the book, with different fonts and sizes to emphasise phrases, is so clever and really helps the words stand out.

What I love about the picture book ‘Wild’

I really like that the book is about feeling that pressure of needing to fit in with everyone else, but having the confidence to just be your own amazing self anyway.

This is something that’s quite close to the mark for us at the moment, with C ‘masking’ a lot of her true feelings at school then struggling at home. I really want for her to have that confidence to express her feelings and just be herself. And not worry so much about fitting in and being like everyone else. This book will hopefully help her to understand that she’s awesome as she is and she doesn’t need to change for anybody 🙂

I would definitely recommend this book – it’s fast becoming one of our new faves!

‘Wild’ is available to buy from Waterstones or Amazon – RRP £7.99.

  2. Coming to you from posting after you in the #KCACOL linky. Thank you for taking the time to share this review! I think the picture you shared from the interior, if representative of the rest of the book, made the book appealing in its design! I like the pictures and the way the wording is playful!

  3. Hannah! I almost fell off my chair when I checked the linky and saw your review sat there – thank you so much! It’s somehow EVEN more thrilling when a lovely blog pal has written kind words about your story. Dawn and myself are so happy to hear that the Twiglets like it and that it might be able to help C remember that she should always be herself. Thank a million! #mischiefandmemories xx

  4. The book looks great and so good to see great bloggers with new adventures too. Any book with such a positive message will always get a thumbs up from me, even though my little man has a couple of years to go before enjoying them.

  9. I’ve seen a lot of people raving about this book lately and it’s such an important message to always be yourself, I think ‘masking’ is becoming a big issue so it’s great when books tackle this and teach children to advocate for themselves and stand up for what they believe in.
