All children need to relax and calm themselves down from time to time. Even more so if you have a child who can be anxious and/or is neurodivergent. The Mindful Lil Minds Breathing Meditation Buddy is a fab new sensory toy which can help your child have some quiet relaxation time to refocus their mind and calm their worries.

What is the Mindful Lil Minds Meditation Buddy?

The Breathing Meditation Buddy is a new toy from GP Flair which aims to promote self-care and mindfulness from an early age. It can help children to become more present and grounded, and help them to manage their big emotions when needed.

How does it work?

It couldn’t be simpler to use the Meditation Buddy! You simply press the koala’s paw to begin a 5-minute breathing meditation. Inside the koala on the battery pack there are switches so you do have the option to switch it off completely, which could be handy if you were somewhere quiet and wanted to just use it as a cuddly toy.

How can you use the Meditation Buddy?

There are various ways to use the Breathing Meditation Buddy:

1. Sitting individually

The child can sit alone in a quiet spot with the toy in front of or next to them. When they press the koala’s right paw, the meditation will begin and they can close their eyes and listen.

2. Sitting in a group/classroom

The koala can be used for group or class meditations, with children sitting or lying on their backs with their eyes closed. As a previous teacher, I think this would be a brilliant way of encouraging a calm, mindful moment during a busy school day! Having something visual (and very cute!) rather than just listening, would really help to include all children.

3. Laying down with toy on chest

The children can lay on their back with the koala on their chest. That way they can feel the gentle weight and the movement of the koala’s tummy up and down as it breathes.

4. Sitting down holding the toy up to their face

The child can hold the koala up to their face as they meditate, so they can inhale the calming eucalyptus scent.

What we love about the Breathing Meditation Buddy

I really love that the Meditation Buddy is multi-sensory. The eucalyptus scent is really calming and the gentle weightedness is excellent for lessening anxious feelings. C loves how soft and cuddly the koala is and will regularly take herself off into her ‘safe space’ and do the meditation by herself. As it’s so easy to use, it’s great for encouraging independence and helping children recognise for themselves when they need some space and quiet time. Sitting under a weighted blanket while cuddling the koala gives some extra deep pressure to lower anxiety further.

The guided meditation itself is super relaxing, with a lovely calming voice. It lasts for five minutes, which is the perfect length of time for a child to relax and feel calm, but not get bored! Particularly for children with attention differences/ADHD. The meditation uses visualisation techniques which can really help the child to feel more grounded and present in the moment. C loved the part about imagining your own treehouse. She actually went on to draw and design her own treehouse completely of her own accord after listening to it – it was very cool!

I particularly love the breathing feature. We have tried various breathing techniques with C when she is anxious or upset – tracing a star or figure of 8 with her finger while breathing in and out, or tracing round her hand. Mostly these have limited success if she is too upset to engage with it. The Meditation Buddy is less effort on her part and just cuddling it naturally encourages her to slow and regulate her breathing in time with the koala.

Where can I buy one?

We would highly recommend this toy as it’s so fantastic for promoting mindfulness and soothing anxiety, particularly for autistic/neurodivergent children. It’s available to buy from Amazon and Very – RRP Β£26.49.
