A couple of months ago, I took the plunge and had a curly cut with a curl specialist hairdresser. I was a bit nervous and unsure of what to expect. But it’s turned out to be one of the best things I’ve done! So I thought I’d share about my experience, in case anyone else is thinking of embracing their natural curls and giving it a go.
What is a curly cut?
A curly cut is quite different from a haircut you might be used to. The most surprising thing is that your hair will be cut dry. This is because getting the hair wet will affect the natural curl pattern. The hairdresser will first look at your face shape then cut each curl individually, according to how it falls. This means that a curly cut can look kind of uneven as all the curls will be different lengths. The hairdresser may do some of the haircut upside down too! (I mean with your head upside down, not the hairdresser!)
Who should have a curly cut?
Anyone who wants to make the most of their curly hair should try having a curly cut. However, because a curly cut is meant to be uneven as it is based on how each individual curl falls, it would not suit someone who straightens their hair often. I think if I was to straighten my hair now, it would probably look rather odd!
Why did I have a curly cut?
My hair history
All my life I’ve battled with my hair. It’s naturally extremely dry and frizzy. I’ve tried so many things over the years to try to combat the frizz but nothing has ever been that effective. When I was at uni I discovered hair straighteners and used to straighten my hair a lot as I found it easier to manage. Since having the twiglets, I can’t really find the time for it, and also can’t be bothered! The only time I was straightening it was when I went to the hairdressers for a cut. And I realised it was kind of silly getting it cut in a style that suits it straight, when actually I don’t ever wear it straight any more and I should be making the most of my curls!
Caring for my curls
So a while ago, I started using better quality curl-specific products on my hair, rather than just buying whatever was on offer in the supermarket! I like Curly Ellie leave-in conditioner and hair mask, and recently I’ve become a big fan of Only Curls products.
Then I started researching more about how to look after curly hair. I bought a microfibre towel to dry my hair with. I started using sulphate and silicone free shampoo and conditioner, and scrunching styling products into my hair rather than just applying them. Also, I bought a satin beanie to wear at night (it’s very fetching haha!)
The condition of my hair definitely started to improve. However, it was still frizzy and was so flat on top with zero volume, then went out at the ends in a triangle shape. (There’s a pic further down this post!) I read about the importance of a good cut with a curl specialist, and realised this was what I really needed to do to make the most of my curly hair.
Where did I have my curly cut?
When I Googled curl specialist hairdressers, I found lots in London but most required booking way in advance and would have been a bit too much hassle. I couldn’t find all that many listed in Surrey where I live. But then I came across the Mary Ann Weeks salon in Guildford, which I’d heard good things about anyway, so I booked there.
What was the experience like?
Lianne, the curl specialist hairdresser at the salon, was absolutely amazing. She was super knowledgeable and gave me so much advice! She even got me to note down on my phone all the steps of her own method of washing and styling curly hair, for me to try to recreate at home.
Once the cut was done, my hair was washed. Lianne talked me through each step and showed me the products she was using. They were all Aveda products. She told me I should aim to wash my hair just once per week and use lots of conditioner (a week’s worth!) After a mixture of curl cream and gel were scrunched in, I then sat under a big accelerator hair dryer thingy. This emits heats gently and is meant to simulate air drying I think, but more quickly. The cast that was formed on my hair from the gel was then shaken and scrunched out. And my hair was finished off with a diffuser. I was super happy with the results!
So here are a couple of photos of my hair before my curly cut. I don’t have any amazing quality pics but you can see the triangular shape of it and how flat, frizzy and lacking in volume it was on top!

And here is after I had my curly cut. I think you would agree the shape is so so much better! And my curls are so much more defined.

My conclusion
For the first time ever in my life, I genuinely love my hair! I feel confident and happy with it. There’s still some frizz but because of the extra volume I think it’s much less noticeable. Plus I’m still learning and experimenting with what my curls need. And I’ve also read that some minimal frizz is actually just part of the territory with curly hair, so I’m trying to just embrace it haha!
So, if you have curly hair, I would 100% recommend having a curly cut. You definitely won’t regret it!
If I get my butt in gear, I will write another post with some of the curly tips I’ve learned so far!
Thanks so much for reading! Til next time,
Hannah xx
