I wrote a little letter for my twins’ fifth birthday, so I thought I’d share it πŸ™‚

Dear H and C,

I can’t believe you’re turning 5 already! It feels like only yesterday we brought you home from the hospital – two tiny, helpless bundles!

And now look at you! Two big, independent, amazing children. I’m so proud of how you have both developed and grown over the past year.

You started school!

starting school

What a huge milestone, and you both adjusted amazingly! You’re doing so well – with your academic work, with making friends, with your confidence. It’s such a shame the ‘naughty virus’ had to cut your Reception year short. But I know you’ll both carry on doing brilliantly moving into Year 1 in September.

Lockdown happened…

I’m so proud of how you’ve both coped during lockdown. Not seeing your friends or teachers, or having much interaction apart from with each other and us, must have been tough.

But you’ve both dealt with it so well and I feel like it’s brought us all closer together. I hope you’ll look back fondly on this time, and remember all the happy family memories we’ve made. Just spending so much more time together – enjoying the garden, playing games, going for walks.

Even our home learning, which you were both amazing at! So proud of how you both threw yourselves into ‘Mummy School’ and worked so hard πŸ™‚

My darling H,

You have grown so much in confidence this year. When you started school, I was nervous at how you’d cope without C by your side all the time. But you have absolutely flourished and are happily carving out your own path now. I’m so proud of how much your confidence has blossomed and of the little chatterbox you’ve become. (Although getting a word in edgeways might be nice sometimes!)

You are doing so well at school and I know your teacher is really impressed with you. It’s crazy how you can just read fluently and easily now – you’ve learned so fast! It’s awesome how much you love writing, and I really hope it stays that way.

One of the most fabulous things about you is how much you LOVE music. You’re obsessed with all the Trolls 2 songs and have a particular affinity for Daft Punk at the moment. I love how happy dancing makes you – we have to continue to nurture and encourage it πŸ™‚

C

My darling C,

I’m so proud of the strong, confident girl you’re becoming. You were quite nervous and quiet when you first started school, and struggled a bit more than we expected with being separated from H. But very soon you came out of your shell and showed everyone your true cheeky self! You have developed into such a funny little character with an amazing sense of humour and the best comedy timing!

You’re doing brilliantly at school – your teacher is always telling me how fab you are πŸ™‚ Your writing is just incredible! And the Maths you can do in your head – well you definitely inherited that from Daddy! πŸ™‚

I love how strong, sassy and independent you are – even though you can be a bit of a madam sometimes! But I hope you always have the strength to speak out and stand up for what’s right – it will take you far πŸ™‚ (If you could just do it slightly less against Mummy, that would be great haha!)

Kindness is key

Kindness is so important. I hope we’re doing a good job of teaching you both to be kind. I’m always so proud when you look out for each other – you’re both so lucky to have a twin. I’ve been very glad that you’ve had each other over this crazy lockdown period – it’s strengthened your bond so much πŸ™‚

Now that your understanding of the world has grown so much, we’ve talked a lot about differences. About how everyone is equally important, and how we should be respectful of each other and celebrate our differences. We’ve had lots of chats and read lots of lovely books about race and disability and children having two daddies or two mummies, and so on. I really hope that you grow up to be accepting of everyone and that you see the value in just being kind.

I hope you enjoy your fifth birthday

I still can’t actually believe that it’s my little twins’ fifth birthday! Where has the time gone?! It does feel like a pretty big milestone really. And as with any milestone, as we’re only going through it once, it is a little bittersweet for us πŸ™‚

Hopefully you both enjoy your birthday. It’s going to be a bit of a funny one this year! No party, no friends round… School in the morning though, which I think will be nice for you as hopefully you’ll get a little fuss made of you by people other than us!

Then a little surprise, fingers crossed, in the afternoon, along with a visit from your Nanny and Auntie πŸ™‚ We’re going to try our best to make it really special for you.

Love you lots and lots. Keep being amazing!

Mummy xx
